NCVT - The National Children and Violence Trust

National Children and Violence Trust (NCVT) is a Non-Profit Organization that functions to support vulnerable groups such as the abused and violated children, women, the unemployed, people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in some of the most impoverished informal settlements in North and West Gauteng. The poor socio-economic conditions, low education levels and the inefficient access to health services provide further insights into factors affecting life-style and well-being of the people with whom National Children and Violence Trust works. The communities are located in the informal settlements of Cosmo City, Diepsloot, Honeydew / Zandspruit, Itsoseng, and Lanseria. These areas are subjected to high incidences of violence and trauma. Our aim is to address the effects of trauma induced by violence, abuse, poverty, inequality, unemployment and HIV/AIDS by providing services that will ensure emotional well-being and the observation of children’s rights and human rights. This is in support of National Children and Violence Trust’s vision of a society where children’s well-being and their rights are protected, preserved and upheld.

Mission Statement

National Children and Violence Trust is a Trauma Centre and child protection development organization whose mission is to reduce the effects of violence and trauma on children, women and the families while ensuring that they are educated and informed about their rights in order to protect themselves and to access justice where a violation has occurred. This mission is based on the following principles: Pro poor, pro children and youth, pro women and respect and dignity for all.

Our aim is to address the effects of trauma induced by violence, abuse, poverty, inequality, unemployment and HIV/AIDS by providing services that will ensure emotional well-being and the observation of children’s rights and human rights. This is in support of National Children and Violence Trust’s vision of a society where children’s wellbeing and their rights are protected, preserved and upheld.

National Children and Violence Trust has a proven track record of over twenty years of effective interventions with 20 dedicated staff members and 28 volunteers. National Children and Violence Trust programmes are guided by three core strategies. First is the preventative strategy, which ensures that children and the people charged with their protection are informed and have a practical understanding of their rights and responsibilities in order to prevent violation that may induce trauma and suffering of the child. Second is the management/curative strategy, a response to the traumatic experiences that children are subjected to on a daily basis and this is realized through the provision of psycho-social and trauma management services.  Thirdly we do capacity building through workshops, campaigns and training.

National Children and Violence Trusts’ strategy for dealing with the continued violence and trauma experienced by children is in support of the South African constitution in particular the children’s rights bill. South Africa’s transformation agenda since 1994, has had positive corresponding policy breakthroughs in the alleviating of conditions of the children and youth.  Our core programs, on average reach over 1500 participants per month.
